A category that includes any lager that isn’t light-yellow in appearance. These lagers are still brewed with lager yeast but they have darker malts in their recipe which makes them appear anything from amber coloured to black. These malt additions impact the flavor too. These beers still have the clean crisp flavor of a lager but with more caramel, toffee or even roasted coffee flavour. Specific styles include Märzen, Oktoberfest, Vienna, Dunkel (means ‘Dark’ in German) and Schwarzbier.
