It gives us great pleasure to introduce you to Sean Byrne, our new manager for both the Putney & Wandsworth stores. Sean joins us with 20 years of experience in the trade so we thought we’d give you a little insight into what makes Sean tick and why we’re pleased he’s joined the TBB team.

What is your work history, where were you before TBB?

I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years. Starting out in the on-trade (pubs, hotels, restaurants). Then I moved into retail around 2005 when I joined Majestic Wine. I spent 4 years there working up to Store Manager. After that I spent a few years working in Independent wine merchants. In 2012 I made the switch over to beer and spent 3 years as Store Manger of Real Ale Ltd in Twickenham. For the last couple of years I have been working at Triple fff Brewery in Hampshire running both their shop and tap room.

What excites you about the beer industry?

The beer landscape is forever changing with new breweries, beer styles and innovations appearing all the time. It’s a very vibrant, inclusive and diverse industry that is always looking forward whilst still celebrating it’s heritage and it’s past. Also I love the fact that there is a never ending flow of new and exciting beers flooding onto the market.

Do you have a favourite beer style and if so, why?

Wine barrel aged beers. A bit niche but I love them (when I can afford them!). Partly, I guess, because of my background in wine. Sort of a best of both worlds. But also for the depth and complexity that can be achieved when they are done well.

You can take only 1 beer (brand) to a desert island, who would it be and why?

Maybe a bit obvious but it has to be The Kernel. They produce consistently excellent beers that are unpretentious but quality focused. Their beers can be both accessible and challenging. From Table Beer which I could drink all day every day (!!) to the Imperial Brown Stout, still one of the best out there. My favourite Kernel beer ever though was the Chardonnay Barrel aged Biere de Saison I had last year. Absolute heaven!!

What can we expect now you’ve taken over the TBB reigns at Putney & Wandsworth?

A focus on quality and diversity in the range we stock. Monthly ‘discovery’ tastings (starting with a Belgian showcase on Saturday 5th May). Plus some meet the brewer and bottle share events.

We’re sure you’ll all give Sean a very warm welcome next time you’re in store.
